Fourteen

Rusty clutched Des against his heart and frowned in confusion. They had rolled off the roof and were falling four stories straight down to their deaths, but it was taking an awfully long time to get to the ground.

Rusty's eyes snapped open. He winced in the glare. It was so bright. Had the sun come out? And since when was sunlight so yellow? With Des cradled against his chest, Rusty passed by the third story window slowly, as if they were falling in slow motion. Golden light glared from the window glass straight into his eyes. Rusty winced and looked down at Des in his arms. Behind the frames of her glasses, her eyes were closed and her cheeks pale. She was obviously unconscious. He supposed that was a good thing, but…

But his hands were blazing like yellow stars, the light burning from under his skin. In fact his arms were glowing right through his sweatshirt. His entire body was glowing. He blinked. Holy shit!

And they were floating. Well not quite, they were still falling, but at what seemed like a really slow rate. They eased past the second story window. Rusty felt his heart leap. Only one story to go. They weren't going to die!

And then the snowy ground rushed up to meet them. Rusty hit the deep snow on his back with a muffled whump and a hard slam. It knocked the wind out of his lungs, making him see stars and his eyes water. He gasped in a breath and groaned. "Oh…shit."

Rusty stared up at the roiling cloudy sky. It had stopped snowing. He took a deep breath and shuddered violently in surprise. He was alive. He was bone-tired, but definitely alive. Flopped on top of him, Des's heart thumped against his. They were both alive.

Rusty closed his eyes in absolute relief. Cheer filled his heart to the brim and overflowed to drip down his cheeks. He wanted to laugh, but for some reason he was just too damned tired to summon more than a smile. "Des, Des, we made it."

Des didn't move.

"Hey, Des?" Rusty struggled to sit up in the deep snow. "Des?" She flopped across his lap like a rag-doll, her eyes closed, her breathing very slow. Had the scare made her pass out? He tapped her cold cheeks. "Des? Come on hon, wake up."

Des didn't move.

"Oh, shit…" Rusty pulled her up by the shoulders of her coat. "Des, girl, come on, you're scaring me here. Wake up!"

"Rusty, what in hell were you thinking?"

"Ah!" Rusty jumped in surprise and turned.

Shiro scowled down at him. He looked perfectly human and as beautiful as a Renaissance angel. "You scared the hell out of me!"

Rusty's heart flipped over in his chest. He grinned stupidly. God, he was happy to see him. "You came."

Shiro snorted. "Of course I came, once you dropped the damned barrier."

"Huh?" Rusty frowned. What the hell was he talking about?

Shiro dropped to his knees at Rusty's side in the snow and set his palm on Des's dark head.
